Prior to becoming Ambassador to Thailand at the time of the December 2004 tsunami disaster, Mr Paterson was head of the Southeast Asia Division in the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. In 2002-03 he was Head of the Government's Iraq Task Force. He was Head of the International Security Division in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra in 2001-02. The division is principally responsible for strategic policy and politico-military affairs. Following the September 11 terrorist attacks, he was appointed chair of the Government's Anti-Terrorism Task Force.
During 2000, he served as Chief of Staff and Principal Adviser to the Foreign Minister. In 1998-99, he served as Assistant Secretary in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, advising and supporting the Prime Minister on Asia, APEC and trade policy issues, including policy toward Indonesia, the East Timor crisis and the Asian financial crisis.
From 1995 to 1997, Mr Paterson was Minister in the Australian Embassy in Tokyo.
In 1993 and 1994 he was Assistant Secretary, Americas Branch, in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, responsible for Australia's political, foreign policy and trade relations with the United States, Canada and the countries of Latin America. From 1991 to 1992, Mr Paterson directed Australia's international public affairs programs. With the ABC, he developed proposals for an Australian television service to Asia (ABC Asia Pacific).
After an attachment to the Office of National Assessments (ONA) in Canberra, Mr Paterson served from 1987 to 1991 as Counsellor at Embassy of Australia in Washington, D.C. He was senior Australian Representative to the United States intelligence community and responsible for liaison with CIA, State Department and other agencies on key politico-military, strategic and economic issues.
Mr Paterson has also served as Director for Nuclear Affairs in the Department of Foreign Affairs, during which he as responsible for nuclear non-proliferation, regional nuclear cooperation and Australian membership of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). From 1981 to 1984, he was First Secretary at the Australian Embassy in Vienna, accredited to Austria, Hungary, the IAEA and the United Nations narcotics bodies. Mr Paterson had responsibility for Australia's bilateral relations with Hungary and for the protection of the interests of Australia's licit opiates industry.
Mr Paterson was a member of the team which opened the Australian Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq in 1976. He worked in Iraq from 1976 to 1978 and undertook a series of short-term missions to Lebanon, Kuwait, Syria and Jordan. Earlier, he served in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 1972 to 1974.
Mr Paterson was educated at Ballarat College and has an honours degree from the University of Melbourne. He has served as a member of the Boards of the Fulbright Commission and the Australian Centre for American Studies. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management (FAIM) and is marries with three children. He was awarded the Public Service Medal in the 2004 Australia Day Honours Awards and, in 2006, the Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal for his leadership of Australia's response to the tsunami in Thailand.

Andrew Biggs is an Australian journalist, author, TV producer and TV presenter who has lived in Thailand since 1989. He worked at the Nation Multimedia Group and established Nation Junior Magazine.
He hosted Channel 3's "Talk of the Town" for nine years as well as a number of other TV programs. He was the first foreigner to report the news in Thai on Thai TV, anchoring "Reugang Lao Chao Nee" for three years.
Andrew has written a number of books on life in Thailand as well as learning English. His first book, "Meuang Thai Nai Sai Ta Pom" was 1998's best-selling book for the year, and "How To Speak English Like A Farang" has sold 200,000 copies since it was first published.
In 2002 he completed his Bachelor's Degree in Mass Communication and Thai language at Ramkhamhaeng University, and moved to BEC-Tero Entertainment to work full time.
In 2007 he received an award from the Thai Government for excellence in the use of Thai language. Two years prior he won the Phetch Siam Award for excellence in TV presentation.
Andrew runs his own language school, Andrew Biggs Academy, at Ekamai, stressing conversation and communication skills.

Gary Woollacott is the Chief Executive Officer of Opus Recruitment Ltd. The company was formed in 2003 to service the needs of local and multinational companies that seek to recruit high quality people. Although Opus Recruitment is relatively new, the consulting team has been together for several years.
From 2000 until June 2003 Gary was Director of KPMG Thailand's executive search unit, leaving when KPMG Thailand decided to withdraw from executive search due to the pressures of the US Sarbanes-Oxley Act. The team left together and Opus was born.
Gary worked in corporate finance in London (Citibank, Sheppards & Chase) for six years, followed by three years in Sydney at the Australian Stock Exchange. He came to Thailand in 1995 and joined the executive search industry.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) from the University of Westminster and a Master of Science (Finance) from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. Last year Gary was President, with particular responsibility for liaison with the Embassy, the Australia Thailand Business Council and other Australian groups. Our relationships with these third parties have become closer and stronger - to the benefit of all parties. He was also actively involved with membership and around 60 new members joined during the year.

Mrs. Barbara Buranasilpin is currently an Advisor of Loxley Public Company Limited. She specializes in products marketing and public infrastructural projects such as Telecommunication and Information Technology.
She holds Directorship positions at Mappoint Asia (Thailand) Co., Ltd., Professional Computer Co., Ltd., and Loxley Information Co., Ltd.
She had been appointed as the Commercial Representative of the Economic Development Authority, Government of South Australia with an objective to encourage trading and investment between South Australia and Thailand in every field.
She was a Board Member of the Australian-Thailand Business Council; Australian-Thai Chamber of Commerce, an Executive Committee of Thai-Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Executive Board member of the Board of Investment's Club. She was also a membership of the Women Secretaries Association of Thailand and Advisor of the Federation of Business and Professional Woman's Associations of Thailand. She was voted as Business Development Woman of the Year in 1991.
Currently she is an active member of many associations such as the Telecommunications Association of Thailand, and also serves as Chairman of Thailand-Australia-New Zealand Business Council. (TANBC)
She is a part-time lecturer of various universities and institutions.

Robert is a Londoner by birth. He retired from Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu in mid-2000, where he had been a partner for nearly 20 years specialising in the areas of computing, forensic accounting, audit and firm management. He was the first expatriate Managing Partner of the Deloitte Thailand [ractice, where he served between 1995 and 1998. Robert has first hand experience in the Thai business and HR culture, having helped many multinational and other businesses establish in Thailand, as well as leading the culture change for his Thai firm.
Robert is the National President of the Australia Thailand Business Council, President of the Australia Thailand Association Inc. (Victoria) and one of the founders of AusThai Connections - an Australian organisation focused on advising on Thai/Australian bilateral trade, HR, cultural and business issues. Robert was actively involved in the development of the Thailand Australia Free Trade Agreement (TAFTA) and hosted the ATBC business dinner for the Prime Minister of Thailand during his visit to Melbourne in July 2004. He has regular contact with visiting Thai ministers and government representatives; liaises regularly with the Thai Consul Generals and the Ambassador of Thailand in Canberra and visits Thailand each year to maintain his Thai connections.
He is the founder of Melbourne's Thai Culture and Food Festival (www.thaifestvic.com), an event that in 3 years has become one of the top 20 events in Federation Square - with 40,000 visitors. Lim Say Boon is Chief Investment Strategist for Standard Chartered Bank, Group Wealth Management. In a career spanning 25 years, he has worked in senior positions in banking/finance and the financial media. Among other things, he has been a Director with Citigroup Private Bank, Head of Investment Research with Singapore's Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation, Regional Research Manager with Crosby Securities, Director of Crosby Corporate Advisory, and Research Director with Standard Chartered Securities.
Mr. Lim, who also worked as Finance Editor for The Herald-Sun and the Sunday Herald newspapers in Melbourne, Australia in the 1980s, has also been a regular commentator on economic and financial matters in the regional media - including regular columns in the past in the Far Eastern Economic Review, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, and Singapore's Straits Times and Business Times newspapers. He is also a frequent guest on CNBC Asia.
He is now based in Singapore and heads up investment strategy globally for Standard Chartered's wealth management business.

Supavud Saicheua is currently Managing Director and Head of Research of Phatra Securities Company Limited, a position held since 1 December 2003. Prior to that, he held the same position at Merrill Lynch Phatra Securities Company Limited. Phatra is a new entity created after a management buyout of Merrill Lynch Phatra. While Merrill Lynch no longer holds any stake in Phatra, the two companies are commercially linked via a business agreement that provides for revenue sharing. A research agreement between Phatra and Merrill Lynch means that the two companies co-produce research on the Thai economy, equity strategy and major Thai stocks.
Supavud was also appointed advisor to the Minister of Finance during February to September 2001. Supavud also served as Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister for Political Affairs from September to November 1997. He assisted Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra on various economic & political issues including privatization of public enterprises.
Supavud served as Executive Vice President of Phatra Securities Co., Ltd. from January 1997 to August 1998. Prior to joining Phatra in May 1994, he was Director of the South Pacific Division of the Department of American and South Pacific Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Between March 1991 and July 1992, Supavud served as the Head of the Office of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Assisting the Permanent Secretary on matters relating to key policy matters of the Ministry, Supavud specialized in international economic issues at the multilateral, regional and bilateral levels.
Supavud earlier served at the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington, D.C. from 1986-1990 in the capacity of economic officer. In Washington, he took part in negotiations on key trade issues between Thailand and the United States such as GSP, intellectual property protection, textiles, agricultural products and several Section 301 cases. He also monitored and analysed trade legislation and reported on the state of the US economy.
Prior to his post in Washington, Supavud was Second Secretary at the Department of Economic Affairs between 1984-86 where he worked on Thai-US economic relations as well as multilateral issues such as the launching of the Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations, textiles negotiations under the Multi-Fiber Arrangement and economic cooperation in ASEAN.
Supavud received his Bachelor of Arts with Honours in economics from Victoria University of Wellington in 1977, a Master of Arts degree in economics from the University of the Philippines in 1981 and Ph.D. in economics from the University of Hawaii in 1984.

Also an economist, Ms. O'Sullivan joined ADB as a Capital Markets Specialist, coordinating assistance to develop and implement financial sector and capital market policies and strategies in private and public financial sectors. Prior to joining the ADB, Ms. O'Sullivan was the Vice President, Risk Management, with National Securities Clearing Corporation (NSCC) in New York, USA. Tamerlaine Beasley is an international management consultant and facilitator specialising in cross-cultural and diversity issues. She is also the founder and Managing Director of the successful cross-cultural consultancy and training company Beasley Intercultural. The focus of her consultancy is assisting client organisations to operate effectively in new and diverse cultural environments. Recently Tamerlaine has facilitated in China for a of a heads-of-country strategy meeting for a multinational client; provided ongoing strategic advice to the CEO and Board of a successful international company; and participated in a team of consultants reviewing the quality of cross-cultural and diversity training in Australia.
Tamerlaine speaks fluent Thai and basic Lao and Bahasa Indonesia. Gavin Thomas has had a successful career discovering ore bodies and developing mining companies from the exploration phase into mid-tier gold or copper producers. He has over 32 years of international experience in exploring for, evaluating, developing, operating and reclaiming mines in North and South America, Australia, the Southwest Pacific, Asia and Europe.
Previously he was Managing Director and CEO of Equatorial Mining Ltd from 1998 to 2004 with the El Tesoro Copper Mine in Chile. Prior to that he was an Executive Director of Niugini Mining Ltd from 1985 where he led an aggressive world wide exploration team that had offices in South America, India, Europe, Malaysia and Thailand. He is probably best known for being credited with discovering the world’s largest gold mine outside of South African at Lihir Island, Gavin becoming a founding Director of Lihir Gold Ltd.
Gavin has a graduate degree in geology from Macquarie University in Sydney, a Chartered Professional of the AusIMM and a member of its Geoscience Taskforce.

Bob is managing director and principal of Foxcom Pte Ltd, a management advisory, operational executive and investment business with specializations in telecommunications & IT, regulation, business development and investment, competition and innovation promotion. He has been chairman of the ICT group of the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce of Thailand since 2005. He has assisted several governments with devising policies to attract foreign investment in the telecommunications and IT areas as well as holding senior level operational roles.
With over twenty two years management experience (over twelve in telecommunications and IT industries), his background and experience include a sound understanding of competition and communications industry regulation through academic programmes and practical experience. He has a keen interest in seeing the advantages of telecommunications innovation and investment translate into benefits for economies and the lives of residents and business.
He was project director to establish Starhub Singapore (now listed) and regional (Asia Pacific) general manager business strategy & development for British Telecom, with significant equity investments in several places around Asia Pacific, and regional (Asia Pacific) director for a listed US broadband services company, held an interim senior executive role for a major middle eastern economy's integrated new second operator. Prior to that he had roles as project GM and main board (council) member for Australia's first private university (now a model for private higher education), practiced as an attorney & solicitor with Baker & McKenzie for some years, with specialization in foreign investment and joint ventures. As group CEO of TIME dot Com ('TIME Telekom'), Malaysia he helped align the activities of the group with national policy and is credited with introducing the adage 'collaborate and compete' to the Malaysian industry.
Bob holds BA (political science, drama) and LLB (commercial and international law) from UNSW (Sydney) and Master of Science (Management) from Stanford University Graduate School of Business where he was a Sloan Fellow.
He has devised and run (at two universities) a short LLM/MBA course on the Japanese company; taught part of Telecommunications Law at NUS for three years and given classes at Singapore Management University, Mahidol University College of Management in Bangkok and elsewhere and is a frequent conference speaker on a variety of management, governance, IT, telecommunications and leadership topics.

1987: Took 50% interest in Westwools Carpets who were in financial difficulty, and proceeded to develop a plan to save the Company and reshape the future.
1994: Formed Aussie Mats & Rugs Pty Ltd with Mr. Ron Delavale.
1997: Bought Westwools remaining shares to have 100% shareholding. Westwools Carpets have proceeded to be acknowledged as one of the leading independent Australian Carpet Manufacturers with staff exceeding 70 people.
2003: Western Region Finalist in "Entrepreneur of the Year" 2003 sponsored by Challenge Bank and Ernst Young.

After graduating from the University of Canberra with a degree in Japanese and Communications, Sean joined Austrade in 1987, shortly after its creation. In his career with Austrade, Sean has been significantly "Asia-focused".
Sean worked with the fledgling education export industry, working on market develop plans for key clients in the tertiary, vocational, secondary and English Language sub-sectors of the industry. During the late 1980s, Sean was managing a major program of education exhibitions in Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
In 1992, Sean took a short term position to Spain where he was the Trade and Investment Manager at the Australian Pavilion at the Universal Expo in Seville. On his return to Australia it was back to the "Asian-focus" when Sean managed the Asia Business Links and Asia Pacific Fellowship programs aimed at helping Australian firms enmesh themselves firmly in Asia to achieve export success.
From 1996, Sean held the position of Manager of the South East Asia Office, Canberra. In January 2000, Sean joined the Singapore office as Senior Trade Commissioner. Over 4 years he introduces major reforms resulting in increased client satisfaction and improve performance. In March 2004 Sean took up the role of Senior Trade Commission Bangkok.

Mrs. Nisa Srisuworanant started working as an economist at the Commodity Research Division, Department of Business Economics in 1977. Her work mainly involved undertaking analytical works and research on agricultural commodities.
From 1987 to 2000, Mrs. Nisa was assigned to work at the Trade Policy Division and Multilateral Trade Division respectively, where work focused on rules and regulations pertaining to international trade, especially those under the WTO.
In 2001, Mrs. Nisa was promoted as a director of Bureau of International Economic Policy, where her main responsibilities lay in analyzing, formulating and recommending appropriate trade policy.

A 22 year IT veteran, Andrew has held a variety of senior posts in IT and more recently Telecommunications.
From April 2007, Andrew is the Senior Vice President of Business Division at DTAC, Thailand's #2 mobile operator with 16m customers. There he is responsible for all business customers and International Roaming for DTAC. In this role he is a member of the Management Committee of DTAC.
Prior to joining DTAC, Andrew spent 9 years with Microsoft in a variety of roles, more recently as Managing Director of Microsoft Thailand since May 2003. In that role he was a member of Microsoft Asia Pacific's Senior Leadership Team, and a Board member of Microsoft South East Asia. During that period, Microsoft Thailand's revenues doubled, with significant improvements in vital outreach to customers, partners, press, government officials and NGO's.
For the two years previous to this role Andrew was the President Director of Microsoft Indonesia were revenues more than doubled in that time. Prior to that he was the Sales Director for Microsoft Asia based in Tokyo, looking after the Partner and Solutions strategies for the 12 subsidiaries in Microsoft Asia including Japan.
Born and educated in Scotland, Andrew has worked in the IT industry for nearly 22 years. He started working in the computer industry as a programmer in BASIC in 1985. After continuing programming in dBASE, Andrew started working for Ashton-Tate as a Technical Support Analyst and shortly thereafter moving to a business development role, working with key partners in the UK.
In 1988, he moved to the largest publisher of software in Europe, European Software Publishing (ESP) working first in one of ESP's companies, Symantec UK building its distribution business 600% in 3 years.
In ESP Andrew was involved in a variety of roles including starting their businesses in France and Germany.
After working for ESP for 6 years, he moved to South Africa starting work for Lotus there. There he was the Cape Town branch manager and then became National Sales Manager at IBM's Lotus in 1995.
In 1997 he joined Microsoft as Corporate Sales Manager responsible for Microsoft's Enterprise sales and marketing team in South Africa. In August 1999 he joined Microsoft Asia's regional support group based in Tokyo as Regional Manager focusing on managed partner strategy and accounts in the region, and from there was promoted to Partner Director and then Sales Director.

Tai joined Standard Chartered Bank in 2000 in Hong Kong after graduating from Queens' College, University of Cambridge, with a Master of Arts degree in Economics. Prior to his current position, Tai spent six years as an economist with Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) researching the Greater China economies, including the PRC, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Chris was born on a family pastoral holding in northern New South Wales, Australia. The property is mixed livestock and farming with predominately a cropping focus, both winter, summer and irrigation. Chris has twenty nine years experience in on-farm agribusiness. He subsequently took up a professional career with international agribusiness group, Elders Limited. Chris spent 6 years with Elders Limited in a number of senior roles including manager rural real estate, mergers and acquisitions, key account management and project development.
In 1998 Chris joined Visy Industries, a large privately owned global packaging company. His primary role was to design and incorporate a waste water recovery re-use system as part of Visy's; AU$450m kraft pulp and paper mill greenfield investment in southern New South Wales, arguably the most technically advanced mill of it's type in the world today. Visy's Chairman, is very active in the national water debate. He commissioned 4 of his project team in 2003 (including Chris) to scope up a 'water initiative study' with participation from state and federal Governments ($5.3m). The terms of reference were narrowed to five key objectives including efficiencies and inefficiencies in the Murrumbidgee river system of New South Wales.
In 2006 Chris and an old colleague established Bellwether Agriculture Pty Ltd. The company's focus is targeted towards providing farmers, food processors and municipalities with reliable, cost effective effluent treatment systems designed to produce sustainable, renewable energy whilst reducing the environmental impact of agricultural and human waste streams.

Nigel Barrett's teaching, research and consulting activities have been in the area of international/global marketing, with a particular focus on the internationalisation of organisations in the Asian region. He has extensive experience in conducting market research for Australian companies in the region over the last 15 years. He has published widely in the area, and current research includes studies of the impact of the Internet on the internationalisation of firms in emerging markets, as well as global brand equity in such markets (including China, Vietnam and Thailand). He pioneered and established the undergraduate and postgraduate programs in international marketing at UTS (eg Master of Business in International Marketing), and was instrumental in establishing the Market Strategy and Information Technology Group (MSAT) and the Centre for International Business. He has also established strategic alliances with universities in Thailand, China and Vietnam. He has recently lead the establishment of a Master of Business in Marketing in Thailand (he is the Director), and is currently negotiating a similar program in Vietnam. Positions held include Head of the School of Marketing (1992-98); Director, Centre for International Business; and, Director, Postgraduate Programs. He is currently Director, Business Development. He has been a Visiting Professor of International Business at both Penn State and Michigan State Universities. Mr Mann commenced his career as a cadet journalist at The Australian newspaper, before moving to then Department of External Affairs. He subsequently had postings as a diplomat to Japan, Cambodia, Italy, China, Indonesia, Thailand, France and Laos. From 1994 to 1997, Mr Mann was the first Chief Executive of the ABC Asian television service.

Burin Kunatippapong, the Country Manager of Bovis Lend Lease (Thailand) Limited, has over 15 years of professional experience in Project, Construction and Risk Management of real estate projects in Thailand and Australia. An Engineer by profession, he has obtained postgraduate degrees in Engineering Management from Australia and in Entrepreneurship Management from Thailand. Under the leadership of Khun Burin, Bovis Lend Lease in Thailand has become a well known brand offering project management and construction services catering to well known local and international clients. During Khun Burin’s tenure as the Country Manager of Bovis Lend Lease (Thailand) Limited, the Company has won several prestigious awards, including Business of the Year and Best Employer of the Year Award form AustCham in 2005 and recently Environmental Excellence Award from AustCham in 2007.
Khun Burin has also been a regular guest lecturer with leading Universities in Thailand and speaker at various international conferences.

Simon Moran is the Vice President and Director for ASEAN of Manheim Asia Pacific. Manheim is the world's largest automotive auction company and operates in the Americas, Europe, Middle East and the Asia Pacific region. Manheim is also a leading provider of services, including for inspections, logistics, refurbishment and certification, managed remarketing, consulting, market research, fleet management, end-of-lease management and information management. Manheim in Thailand was established in Thailand in 2001 and is a joint venture between Australian auction giant, Fowles Auction Group and Manheim Auctions Inc a wholly owned division of Cox Enterprises.
Simon has worked for the Fowles operation since 1990. He established the New Zealand operation in 1997 and continued with its development through to 2000 as General Manager before spending more time back in Australia, and then onto Thailand.
With more than 17 years experience in the industry, and involvement in many markets internationally Simon brings a depth of corporate and practical experience from the perspective of various entry strategies, business set up from the get go to profits for shareholders.
Simon, already known to many as the MC for several Chamber events recently led Manheim to win the AustCham Thailand Best SME Award for 2007.

Mr Philip W Forrest Managing Director Asia, Omega Performance Corporation

Phil has spent the last 26 years living in South East Asia, in the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore. He spent 15 years with Citibank and was its Country Head (Institutional Banking) in Thailand in 1988-89. More recently he was ANZ's General Manager, Asia, before taking up his current role with Omega Performance in 2000.
Omega Performance is believed to be the world's biggest bank training organization, and is proud to work in Thailand with most of the largest local and foreign financial institutions.
Phil was president of the Australia Thai Chamber of Commerce in 1991, and of AustCham Singapore from 2000 to 2004. (He is currently Treasurer of the Chamber.) He is also Deputy Honorary Secretary, and Vice Chairman of the International Relations Committee, of the Singapore Business Federation, the republic's umbrella "chamber of chambers".
